ADVICE
MAKING ADJUSTMENTS
IN CROP GROWING
There are several ways of fine
tuning your operation and many of
these can dramatically alter the
profitability of the farm. Some of
these adjustments include:
Selling Off That Extra 100 Acres
That extra farm may be just the
dead weight that keeps dragging
the operation down. By the time
one tries to service the debt on it,
there is nothing left for family liv-
ing. It's a tough decision to sell off
that special piece of ground that
you've wanted to have all your life.
Perhaps you might even have to
sell it at a loss. But the difference
between principal and interest
payments and what you could rent
the land back for would probably
absorb this loss in a couple of
years. The selling of the farm will
not only reduce debt Toad but also
move the operation from a high
risk position to a lower one.
Selling Off Equipment
When one suggests this tactic,
the response is generally pretty
cold. It has often been said,
farmers would rather part with
their wife than their big tractor. I
won't challenge the accuracy of
this statement other than just to
say return on investment must be
looked at. The most critical pieces
of equipment are planters and
sprayers. The crop must be put in
the ground on a timely basis.
However, often trading, sharing
implements or renting certain
pieces of equipment can be cheaper
than straight ownership.
Off -Farm Income
I have heard more than one
farmer say that it was the off -farm
job that helped them through the
troubled times. The extra revenue
came on a regular schedule, which
improved their cash flow and it
also freed up some money for the
little things which otherwise
couldn't have been afforded. The
unfortunate part is that high pay-
ing off -farm jobs are not that easi-
ly landed. However, cropping does
