generally yield 40 per cent higher
than their spring -planted counter-
parts such as wheat, barley and
rapeseed (canola). That translates
into more money in growers'
pockets.
Winter crops also contribute to
soil conservation on the farm.
They provide winter soil cover,
prevent erosion, conserve moisture
and help to retain soil nutrients. ❑

CONSERVATION
— BY LAW
Beginning in 1987, Quebec
farmers will be subject to soil con-
servation by law. No longer will
farmers be allowed to plow their
fields right to the edge of water-
courses. A strip of three metres
must be left uncultivated between
any watercourse and cultivated
land.
The stated purpose is double
barrelled; it will prevent erosion
and at the same time diminishes
pollution through chemical run-
off.
The government plans a five-
year education program for
farmers who will be in the same
position as home owners who
already are prohibited from
building closer than 10 metres to
riverbanks.
The result will be that some
27 000 hectares of land will be pro-
tected; 9 000 ha of this is presently
cultivated. The UPA, (the
equivalent of the OFA) wants the
government to pay farmers for this
land now lost to agriculture. ❑AV
WOOD SHAVINGS
CAN POSE DANGER
Egg, poultry and livestock pro-
ducers beware -- wood shavings us-
ed as bedding or litter could pose a
hazard to the health of your
animals.
Chlorophenate wood preser-
vatives are used by the sawmilling
industry to prevent fungi from
staining freshly cut lumber. Shav-
ings and sawdust from processed
lumber are likely to contain small
amounts of wood preservatives.
Agriculture Canada says these
should not be used for animal or
poultry bedding because the
chemical can be absorbed through
contact. ❑
