Tested Ram Show (the same
amount as last year) averaged
$509, up $107 from Sheep Focus
'85. The highest selling Suffolk
was from the flock of Grant
Coultes of Wingham and sold for
$1550 to Blaine Kennedy of
Omemee. The highest selling
Dorset was from Century Lane
Farm, Shirley and Robert Graves
of Stittsville and sold for $735 to
John Vink of Schomberg. The 14
Dorset rams in the ROP sale
averaged $419, the two Hampshire
rams averaged $438, the two Ox-
fords averaged $313, and the 34
Suffolks averaged $565, up $168
from last year. The top selling
ROP Home Tested Ewe of Bill
McTaggart of Guelph sold for
$500 to Tony Locke of Athens.
The overall ewe average was $284.
Once again, Sheep Focus '86
provided a forum for all aspects of
the sheep industry in Ontario. The
organizers are very pleased with
this year's show and have already
started planning for the 10th an-
niversary show next year. ❑
NEW VET FELLOWSHIP
The importance of animal and
veterinary research is recognized
by the Canadian Veterinary
Research Trust Fund (CVRTF)
which awards a fellowship to a
veterinarian who wishes to pursue
a career in research. The first reci-
pient of the award is Dr. Jonathan
Heeney, of Islington, Ontario.
Dr. Heeney is a native of On-
tario who obtained his D.V.M.
from the Ontario Veterinary Col-
lege in 1984 and is currently com-
pleting his DVSc in Pathology.
Previous experience includes work
as a Research Assistant, a
Pathology Resident and in private
practice. Dr. Heeney's PhD pro-
gram will focus on viral on-
cology/pathology of viral diseases
of domestic animals with par-
ticular emphasis on Bovine
Leukemia Virus in cattle. The PhD
program will commence in
September, 1986 and is targeted
for completion in the summer of
1988.
In addition to the new Canadian
Veterinary Research Fellowship,
the CVRTF supports veterinary
research throughout Canada by
financially contributing to a wide
range of projects in both large and
small animals. ❑
