moldboard plowing, combined
with various types of discing,
cultivating or harrowing."
Conservation tillage leaves
reasonable amounts of crop
residue on the soil surface. More
top soil residue means more water
absorption, less wind and water
soil erosion and more organic mat-
ter saved.
The time-honoured moldboard
plow faces a challenge because it
leaves only approximately five per-
cent of the stubble of a grain corn
field on top of the ground. But, by
using a mulch tiller, easily up to 50
per cent of the stubble will be left
atop the soil.
One thing is apparent in the
gradual change from moldboard
plowing to conservation tillage
techniques; there's no one `best'
system. What works in one area
may not work in another.
"Very often, tillage alone can-
not do a complete job in controll-
ing soil erosion well enough," says
Little. "Sometimes conservation
tillage has to be coupled with other
conservation practices like con-
touring, striperopping, crop rota-
tions, grassed waterways, terrac-
ing, and so on."
'The conservation tillage equip-
ment on display at the Hastings
County International Plowing
Match and Farm Machinery Show
at Stirling has pre -event field
testing in Hastings County. Com-
parative information on invest-
ment costs, horsepower, fuel and
labour requirements, plus topsoil
crop residue, will be available at

CALL LINE SERVICE
FOR PESTICIDE
Agriculture Minister John Wise
recently announced the establish-
ment of a national call line service
to provide information to the
public on pesticides. The call line
will be accessible toll free from
Newfoundland to British Colum-
bia. A pilot call line operated in
Eastern Canada last year.
Experienced staff at Agriculture
Canada will provide information
to growers, industry, the media
and the general public on the
registration process, label informa-
tion, safety precautions, and issues
surrounding pesticide use. Callers
can reach the toll free service by
dialing 1-800-267-6315.0
