This way you can borrow ex- actly what you need, when you need it, based on your cash flow. And adjust your loan level as your actual requirements change. Never make repayment com- mitments that are unrealistic. That's important. And always pay by the due date, or a little before. This will help your credit rating — and your banker will love it. Keep your banker briefed at all times, and don't spring any sur- prises. It's all in your own best in- terest. ❑ Dollar Sense offers general financial advice by members of The Institute of Chartered Ac- countants of Ontario. THE ELISA TESTING SYSTEM The Ontario Egg Producers' Marketing Board, in co-operation with the Hope Laboratories of Shakespeare, Ont., has initiated a research project to refine and in- vestigate the use of a breakthrough in disease -testing procedure called the ELISA system. ELISA, short for Enzyme Link- ed Immunosorbent Assay, was developed over the past decade, and has found many applications in medical and veterinary science. Applications to poultry were developed in 1983-84 at the University of Guelph, with spon- sorship from the Ontario Egg Board. The advantage of ELISA is that it permits very rapid testing of blood samples for a wide range of viruses and other pathogens, and antibodies to them. Whereas con- ventional testing systems take up to three weeks to identify the presence of disease pathogens in an animal, the ELISA makes results available in two to three days. It costs relatively little. Because ELISA is so rapid, it can be used to monitor poultry flocks for antigens and to thus evaluate the effectiveness of vac- cination programs. In this way, vaccination programs can be modified and improved, thus enhancing immunity to various diseases. ❑ COMFORT CASTRATOR AND CASTRETTES D.C.
