The Pilot Project report recom-
mended, "the Third Party Board
must be empowered to ultimately
enforce decisions when required ...
by legislation, to provide `clout."'
Robert MacKenzie, chairman of
the Review Board for the pilot pro-
ject, says that solid groundwork
was laid by that project for
measuring the success of the new
review process.
"It is important for the process
itself to be reviewed," says
MacKenzie, noting that provisions
are not made in the legislation for
this to happen.
"The people who are on the
board are critical and the people
who review the process are
critical," says MacKenzie. "They
must have the integrity to be able
to say it isn't working, if that's the
case."
Speaking to a recent meeting of
the Bruce County Federation of
Agriculture in Walkerton, Brigid
Pyke addressed concerns that debt
review boards cause losses to
creditors.
"This legislation will not cause
losses — they're already there. It's
just a matter of trying to deal with
them."
As to the worry that any kind of
debt review process will undermine
the confidence of the lending com-
munity in farming Pyke concludes,
"If you have a good working rela-
tionship with your banker, there is
no reason for this legislation to
change that."LIGB
SHOULD STANDARDIZE
EQUIPMENT PARTS
Farm machinery makers should
be standardizing equipment parts
to help farmers cut cost, says
Charlie Mayer, Canadian Wheat
Board Minister, at the Canadian
Farm and Industrial Equipment
Institute annual meeting.
Mayer says that parts such as
bearings, pulleys, and V -belts
could easily be standardized.
The machinery industry, says
Mayer, has emphasized developing
new, different, and competitive
lines that don't help the financially
pressed farm community. Instead,
various farm input makers, along
with chemical companies, should
be helping farmers and be united
with them in their public
positions. SM
