When it comes to credit, the franchisee would still be responsi- ble for their own operating loans, but Lemmon says the franchisor could set up the best possible capital arrangements. "Lenders will base their loan limit decisions on the management ability of the operator and the financial strength of the franchis- ing company. Asset base lending will disappear. Lenders will have comfort in that the franchisor will not let the individual operator fail," Lemmon adds. Since franchising is already a proven system in industries from fast food to accounting, Lemmon is confident that it's also the answer to preserving the family farm. Before farm franchising can work, however, he says certain at- titudes, towards independence and private ownership, must change. To begin with, Lemmon notes, farm survival now depends on a number of other people, including bankers, suppliers and consumers. Also, "the farmer shouldn't feel he has some sort of God-given right to be in the farm business. No more than the manufacturer who owns his own land and plant has the right to remain in business." Pointing to the situation south of the border, Lemmon notes that large corporate farms are already becoming common in the U.S. Franchising, Lemmon says, not only offers a workable solution to the current economic squeeze fac- ing farmers, but also provides a means of preserving the family farm while letting younger farmers come into the industry.EAG WASPS CONTROL LEAFMINER In 1985, the Bruce County OMAF participated in a project with Agriculture Canada to release parasitic wasps to help control the alfalfa blotch leafminer. The wasps were released at Ripley, Dobbinton, Holland Centre, Ayton, and Shelburne, to cover the three county area. This year they have been checked and appear to be spreading. Their benefit should be noticed in two to three years. They spread at a rate of 60 km/year. Joan McKinlay, Soil & Crop Specialist.
