The Rural Voice, 1986-08, Page 7was full of two-year-old feed and
nesting rats.
When we sold in Kent County
we purchased two parcels of land
in Bruce County. We had two
mortgages with retired farmers.
We have steadily built up a
425 -acre cash crop operation. The
farm is one of the best kept in the
Formosa area, producing some of
the best yielding and managed
crops. The buildings have all been
repaired and additions made. We
have added to the economy of this
rural area by employing help, til-
ing, buying seed, fertilizer,
chemicals, and farm machinery
and paying back our farm loans.
Our crops have been planted on
time, and harvested. We lived
through low commodities, high in-
terest rates and the economical
recession. We have paid for two
children to further their education
in College and University. No
grants, no loans, no OFFIRR in-
terest rebate, even though we have
made interest payments.
Why is it that with two farmers
starting out basically the same, one
shows defeat and destruction and
the other goes ahead, an asset to
agriculture.
The low down payment has in
no way paid for his use of the farm
operation. The destruction and
theft of chattels and the loss of this
year's crop and the devaluation of
the property, has created high
stress levels in this family. There
are no programs available to help
out. Society in general shows sym-
pathy towards the financially sink-
ing farmer, not the one who
manages to juggle his assets
around to save his family from
financial ruin.
