2 [HE RURAL. VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
The agricultural industry is a dynamic
industry of contrasts, ups and downs,
and changes. The mail and contacts
that reach us at The Rural Voice of-
fice attests to that.
Somewhat upsetting was the newly
released report from the Agricultural
Council of Ontario stating that the
majority of small farmers would have
to rely on off -farm income to stay on
the farm, and that they would need
support programs for their different
commodities because they would be
unlikely to receive an adequate price
in the marketplace.
In contrast, in the same mail, were
fancy, shiny -papered, four -coloured,
annual reports, that must have cost a
fortune to produce, from various
commissions and boards, extoling
aspects of their particular commodi-
ty. As an aside, who receives these?
Further, who pays for them — the
same farmer who doesn't get a good
price for his product?
Delivered to the office, are some of
the "ups of the industry," — our
lead story, written by Alice Gibb,
about a Canadian firm and their
breakthrough in research into im-
munostimulants used to treat viral
diseases; a story by Phyllis Coulter
about a philosopher/farmer doing his
utmost to market Canadian wool; an
invitation to attend the fiftieth an-
niversary of a local machinery dealer-
ship. The downs — strong rumours
of even lower prices in grain markets,
and as we go to press, all indications
of a disastrous wheat crop.
In the same mail, a press release from
Centralia College of Agricultural
Technology offering a variety of crop
demonstrations and market forecasts;
another press release from a conser-
vation authority which has been pro-
moting good manure management
practices for the past four years.
It's the farmer that has to deal with
the contrasts, face the changes, and
the ups and downs. Remember when
living on a farm was considered to be
a relaxed way of living? Oh well,
maybe next year will be better.
