WHAT'S NEW?
Folding grain drill
Flexibility of 20 degrees up or
down, across a seeding width of 36
feet enables the new John Deere
8500 or 8550 3 -section front
folding grain drills to handle large-
scale seeding on terraced or rolling
ground with consistent accuracy,
without the rigidity of conven-
tional drills. And they fold
hydraulically to less than 16 ft.
wide in under a minute, for easy
transport from field to field.
The capacity of the 8500, for
grain only, is 2.8 bushels per foot.
The 8550 grain/fertilizer model in-
creases this capacity to 3.4 bushels
per foot, for seeding without fre-
quent stops to refill.
Options for furrow openers are
double disk with either aluminum
or cast iron boots, 13 -in. single
disk, 14 -in. semi -deep single disk,
and spring -trip hoe openers that
clear unyielding objects and return
automatically to seeding position.
Single -disk, double disk, and
spring -trip openers are for 7, 8,
and 10 -in. spacing; semi -deep
single -disk openers are for 8 and
l0 -in. spacing. Over the full 36 -ft.
width of the drill, the number of
openers ranges from 63, with 7 -in.
spacing, to 45, with 10 -in. spacing.
Depth gauging for double disk
openers permit seed placement 11/2
in. into the furrow. Adjustable
depth gauge wheels are available
for drills with spacing of at least 7
in. For extra depth -gauging preci-
sion using drills with spacing of 10
in. or more, a Tru-VeeT`1 opener
attachment gives accurate seed
placement from 3/4 to 31/ in. deep.
Available attachments include a
grass seeder for legumes or
forages, a grain agitator for
trashy, innoculated seed as well as
light seed, cover chains or gang
press wheels for positive seed -to -
soil contact, and a new two -bar
harrow that levels the seedbed and
covers the seed. Also, track
