The Rural Voice, 1986-06, Page 68ADVICE drain and triple rinse is to use one of the commercial pressure rinsers which do the job in 30 seconds. These devices puncture the metal of plastic containers and direct streams of water from a pressuriz- ed source onto the inner sides of the container. The rinsate is drain- ed directly into the sprayer tank. The recommended procedure for glass containers, paper or plastic sacks or containers of more than 100 litres capacity has to be modified. Glass containers cannot be punctured and normally the drain and triple rinse procedure is preferable to the pressure rinsing device. Following the rinse, these containers should be crushed and buried. Plastic sacks may be rinsed once into the tank before burying but as a rule this is not feasible for paper containers. These may be shaken — carefully — into the tank until all residue is out if the compound has been prepared for use in sprayers. The sacks may then be buried (label directions may warn against burning). Containers of more than 100 litres should not be punctured. They should be sent to a drum reconditioner after they have been rinsed and the water drained or pumped into the sprayer tank. The real objective of the rinsing program is to "avoid any possibili- ty of hazard to children who might find containers with a residue of concentrate or to animals that might come into contact with it. When the containers are buried — as they should be to avoid littering — they are clear of any chemical that might seep into the ground. Throughout the procedure, pro- tective clothing and equipment — worn while the tank was being loaded — should be kept on. THE POWER TAKE -OFF SHAFT Every year there are a number of serious injuries involving power take -off shafts on Ontario farms. A shaft turns with such speed and momentum that an individual can- not stop it once caught. Loose or torn clothing are extremely dangerous around this fast moving equipment. The best safety advice is to make certain all power take- off shafts are guarded and to stay clear when they are turning.
