ADVICE
CACA promotes
rinsing program
Canadian farmers may be
wasting as much as $6 worth of
chemical concentrate in every
average size pesticide container
they believe they have emptied.
The savings can be picked up by
properly rinsing the apparently
emptied containers and draining
the rinse water into the sprayer
tank. The "drain and rinse" pro-
cedure has been promoted
vigorously over the last three years
by the Canadian Agricultural
Chemicals Association as part of
its "safe use" campaign.
Here's the cost saving procedure
the CACA recommends for rinsing
metal or plastic containers of less
than 100 litres capacity.
• After pouring the contents into
the sprayer tank, continue to
drain the container for 30
seconds.
• Add rinse water (or other ap-
propriate diluting fluid) until
the container is about one-fifth
full.
• Replace the cover of the con-
tainer firmly; shake or roll it
and drain the rinse into the
sprayer tank. Let it drain for 30
seconds after the flow stops and
drops begin.
• Repeat this twice more for a
total of three rinses.
• Before pouring out the third
rinse, puncture the container.
Do this at the top, near the
spout to help the rinse water
take out any residue in the
beading.
Following the third rinse, con-
tainers should be disposed of ac-
cording to local regulations. If
they are to be kept on the farm,
they should be crushed and buried
at least 45 cm (18 inches) below
ground and away from grazing
areas, water or water courses.
A time saving alternative to the
