amendment to the Farm Improve-
ment Loans Act to include
guarantees on fixed-rate loans.
Among the long range ideas for
further study the task force
pointed to the role of part-time
operators, credit unions, alter-
native new debt instruments and
the feasibility of a Registered Farm
Investment Fund and a joint in-
terest subsidy program by lenders
and government. It recommended
a review of all current legislation
concerning farm taxes. ❑
Group appeals
to wives of MPs
When Beth Slumskie of the Con-
cerned Farm Women in Bruce
County came home from teaching
and opened her mail, she found
three letters from the wives of
federal members of parliament.
The letters are in response to an
appeal made by the joint forces of
Women for the Survival of Agri-
culture, South -Western Women
for the Support of Agriculture,
and The Concerned Farm Women.
The groups are appealing to politi-
cians' wives to get support for
legislated debt review boards "that
have power and clout."
The organizations sent each
MP's wife, and each female MP a
letter and a copy of the book, The
Farmer Takes A Wife, a study
done by Concerned Farm Women
in 1982.
The three letters received are
positive responses to the action.
Donna Thacker whose husband is
MP Blaine Thacker of Lethbridge
Foothills riding says her family is
active in farming, and as a nutri-
tion teacher she is aware of
farmers' concerns. As a wife, con-
sumer, and teacher, she vows to
continue to encourage higher
prices be paid to farmers for their
products.
Monique Blackburn, whose hus-
band is MP in Brant riding says she
supports the efforts of farm
women's groups.
Laureen Marchi, wife of Sergio
Marchi, York West MP, said in
her letter that she appreciated
receiving the book, and "hopefully
the government will listen."
The three letters certainly do
show support. Unfortunately, not
one of them addresses the issue of
debt review boards as was re-
quested by the farm women
groups, Slumskie points out. PC
