Project needs
volunteer drivers
The Women's Centre and
Women's House of Bruce County
serve women in crisis in Grey and
Bruce — 70 to 80 per cent of the
women who come into the centres,
come because of abuse to them-
selves or their children. Many
women across the 35 sq. km of the
twin county area find getting to the
centres a major difficulty, either
because their family situation
limits access to a car or because it
is a rural community with larger
distances between services.
The sheer size of Grey -Bruce
means that there are still areas of
the two counties where there are no
drivers. This spring, the transpor-
tation project hopes to locate
volunteers willing to help with the
occasional driving in the following
areas: North of Wiarton, Dundalk
area, Markdale/Flesherton, and
the Kincardine area. Contact:
Marilyn Struthers, Network Co-
ordinator, 519-371-1600 or
1-800-265-3722. ❑
Bruce cattlemen:
chance to vote
The Bruce County Cattlemen
are holding a meeting on Tuesday,
June 3 to give beef producers in the
county the chance to vote on
whether or not they want the com-
pulsory check -off to be refun-
dable. The meeting begins at 8
p.m. at the Chesley Community
Centre.
At the present time, the check-
off is two per cent of the gross sale
value of the cattle or twenty cents
per one hundred dollars. This
money is used to fund national
advertising, the Ontario Cat-
tlemen's Association, Canadian
Cattlemen's Association, and the
Beef Information Centre. Cat-
tlemen have the option of applying
to have this money refunded.
The Ontario Cattlemen's
Association (OCA) has approach-
ed the Ontario Minister of
Agriculture and Food to have this
made non-refundable. They also
want the amount of the check -off
to be on a value-added basis. The
meeting will be an opportunity for
producers to make their views
known by way of a vote. Edgar
Wideman, President of the OCA
will be at the meeting. ❑
