lbs. should be grouped together
onto a foster sow and left until up
to this minimum weight. When
weaned they should be given a bet-
ter diet and have extra attention
paid to their housing and
temperature situation. a
CREEP FEEDING
Creep feeding for weanlings has
been under discussion for some
time and the essential features of a
sound creep feeding program in-
clude:
• An acceptable and digestible
diet.
• A suitable diet, either as a flaky
meal or a small pellet being
preferable.
• A good feeder which makes the
feed visible and available.
• Feeder location in the creep area
to ensure the feed stays clean,
fresh, and dry.
• A frequent and often feeding
system that ensures removal of
uneaten feed and frequent
replacement with fresh
material.
Weaner pen feeders should be of
such a design that all the weaners
can eat at once. This habit con-
tinues for about two weeks after
weaning and feeder numbers could
then be reduced.
In the two week post weaning
period if the diet is producing
reasonable feed intake levels, fast
growth, good feed conversion and
low post weaning losses, then the
system should not be changed. If
piglet establishment is poor, then
the above factors as well as en-
vironment, feeding space and
water supply should be looked at
carefully for possible solutions to
the problem.
