nursery), cages, a good environ-
ment and a feed containing a high
percentage of milk products. Some
producers who try to wean at three
weeks without a specialized
nursery would likely be better off
with four week weaning.
Four Week Weaning — The ma-
jority of Ontario pork producers
tend to wean at four weeks of age.
Generally, weaning pens or decks
are used. Normally, facilities,
equipment and feed are less expen-
sive for four week weaning. En-
vironment such as temperature, air
speed and amonia gases are often
the limiting factors in four week
weaning.
A survival rate of 98 per cent or
a mortality rate of 2 per cent
should be your goal, from weaning
to 50 lbs.
A 50 Lb. Feeder pig in Nine Weeks
or 63 Days
Most pork producers should be
able to produce a 50 lb. feeder pig
in nine weeks or 63 days. Low
levels of vomitoxin in last year's
corn crop have reduced weaner pig
consumption and gains in some
herds. In some cases it is taking 12
to 15 weeks to produce a 50 lb.
feeder pig. Check your days to 50
lbs. If this is considerably greater
than nine weeks, you may consider
purchasing a commercial starter
ration. C
NEW SOUVENIRS
AT CONGRESS
People collect almost everything
imaginable from stamps to coins to
match boxes. Collecting silver teas-
poons is popular, and the Ontario
Pork Congress in Stratford will be
selling teaspoons with their logo
for the first time this year, says
souvenir committee member, Viola
Bell.
The committee sold teaspoons a
few years ago, but this is a new
style, she says. If you are looking
for souvenirs at the Congress, you
will also be able to find tie tacs and
suit lapel pins along with the more
traditional souvenirs including
aprons.
Viola Bell notes that the teas-
poons haven't arrived yet, but the
competition isn't worried, they ex-
pect to receive them in advance of
the hie event. PC
