BIRTH TO WEANING
IS CRITICAL TIME
Ontario's top pork producers do
a good job of raising pigs from
birth to weaning. The average pro-
ducer, however, has a pre -weaning
mortality of 18.5 per cent with a
range from 9.3 per cent to 35.6 per
cent. The average pork producer
still has considerable room for im-
provement. A survival rate of 90
per cent or a mortality rate of 10
per cent should be your goal from
birth (born alive) to weaning.
In general, most pork producers
could do a better job at weaning, a
very stressful time in the life cycle
of the pig.
