Woodstock area pork producer
interested in profiting from
a reduced energy bill. Together
with Ontario Hydro, Hans
worked out an effective energy
saving plan.
Hans, who keeps 110 Yorkshire-
Landrace sows, uses 40 infra-
red heat lamps 1250 watts each i
in his farrowing operation. He
wanted to reduce his heat lamp
output, especially during the
summer. Ontario Hydro farm
specialist Keith White suggested
using dimmer switches.
An experiment was set up by
Ontario Hydro's London-based
regional agricultural su-
pervisor Stan Stewart it
to test the idea. Two

600 watt capacity dimmers
controlling four lamps were in-
stalled. Four other lamps
were metered without dimmer
controls. Indust four weeks, the
dimmers had paid for themselves
Ontario Hydro has also worked
to encourage manufacturers
to develop new energy saving 125
and 150 watt lamps. Of course,
well insulated and ventilated
barns make any of these heating
options more effective
