20 THE RURAL VOICE
INNOVATIONS
(cont. from page 19)
In the "idea" category of the in-
novation contest, the winner is
John Van Haren of Ridgetown.
Van Haren's feeding system for his
testing barn will feed and measure,
at pre-set intervals, the amount of
feed which is fed to each litter of
10 pigs. The animals are weighed
when they are put on test and
weighed again when they come off
test. The amount of feed which is
used is stored in the memory of the
computer and can be accessed by a
printer. The weight gained by the
pigs during tests is added on and
the cost per kilogram of gain can
then be calculated.
Rienk and Maaike Wiegersma of
R.R. 3, Palmerston placed second
in the idea class with an easy way
to mark sow or litter numbers up
to 699. The ear -notching technique
is done by using a maximum of
three notches on the tip of the ear
up to the number 99. Notches to
signify hundreds are made closer
to the head. In order to read the
notches, those on the right ear are
multiplied by 10 and those on the
left ear are multiplied by one. For
the total number, the value of all
notches are added together.
Gerald Godwin of Brenwin
Swine Enterprises in Comber
placed third in the same category
with the invention of a helpful data
form. It is intended for use in an
operation where an up-to-date
minute check is required on
livestock numbers. If the form is
kept in a convenient location, it re-
quires only a few moments each
day to record any activity as it af-
fects the numbers of pigs in each
segment of the herd. It is also con-
venient to collect data if a com-
puter is used. The data form can
also be helpful in dealing with a
lending institution.
Godwin points out that like all
recordkeeping devices, it is only as
good as the effort that goes into
keeping it up-to-date. However, he
adds that the time required each
day to update it is less than a
minute or two, but the ac-
cumulated data is very significant.
Godwin's form along with all
the innovations entered in the com-
petition will be videotaped and
shown at the Ontario Pork Con-
gress in Stratford this month
(June) so all producers have the
opportunity to learn from the in-
novative minds of these pork pro-
ducers. PC
