Now they are using 125 watt bulbs and a heat bulb shield with an energy saving high/low switch, which is kept on high for 10 days, low for 14 days, and off from then until weaning. Because of the lower temperature in the room, they've placed a 250 -watt bulb behind the sow t'or the first day of farrowing so that the little pigs don't get chilled when they are born. Ypma estimates the energy savings at $5.78 per litter. The lids of the creep boxes open easily to check the young pigs, and the boxes are large enough to hold 10 piglets at four weeks of age. The heat lamp shields can be removed so the pigs don't break the bulbs when they are older. Ypma estimates that the total cost of each creep box is about $50. Ben Brown from the Sebringville area designed a "farrowing fan" to prevent piglets frm being crush- ed at farrowing time or shortly after. Brown noticed that at far- rowing time, when a sow stood up between births, the piglets would move from the creep area to underneath the sow seeking the comfort of the flooring warmed by the sow's body heat. When the sow lay back down, the piglets would be trapped beneath her. Under Brown's system, when the sow stands up she breaks the light beam which starts the fan mounted in the backdoor at floor level. The fan directs a narrow stream of high velocity air which does not spread into the creeps. The stream of air cools the piglets and they move away from it and back to the creeps so that when the sow lies down again, there are no piglets in the danger zone. The light beam is re-established and the fan stops. The components of the farrowing fan are an infra red light detector, a 4900 r.p.m. squirrel cage fan, a relay box, and a reflector. Frank Streek of Hay Bay Farms Limited in Napanee designed a method of distributing medicated water to many locations thereby saving the expense of several medicators. Streek describes the construction as "relatively simple." It consists of optional by-passes of the nor- mal water flow by selecting three- way valves. Each three-way valve covers one room and water or medicated water may be selected by opening or closing the valves concerned.
