The Rural Voice, 1986-04, Page 74FARM ADVICE valuation day value) - undepreciated value. GROUP 1 = '/2 ($117,300 - $17,300) - $10,000 = $40,000 ex- tra income MSQ = '/z ($95,200 - $5,200) - $5,000 = $40,000 extra income So a total of $80,000 has to be add- ed to taxable income in the year of the quota sale. If he had no other taxable in- come that year, income tax on $80,000 is $33,400. So, net returns from the quota sale = $212,500 - $33,400 = $179,100. If he sold the herd as well that year, and already had a $50,000 taxable income, adding the $80,000 quota sale brings another $4,000 income tax. So net returns on quota sale in this case = $212,500 - $43,000 = $169,500. Income tax might be further reduced by splitting the sale of the quota over two years, by forward averaging income or using five year block averaging.
