CWIP develops
wildlife program
Would you be interested in lend-
ing wildlife a helping hand? Does
the continuing loss and deteriora-
tion of wildlife habitat concern
you? If so, the Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources (MNR) would
like to hear from you.
The Community Wildlife In-
volvement Program (CWIP) is
your chance to join with the MNR
and participate in hands-on
wildlife management. The pro-
gram was developed to enable you
or your group to play an active,
more responsible role by par-
ticipating in wildlife conservation
and improving opportunities for
outdoor recreation.
CWIP (Cee-wip) projects may
include habitat improvement, the
building of bird nesting boxes, and
the monitoring of wildlife popula-
tions, as well as the re -introduction
of certain species such as wild
turkeys.
Staff from the Wingham district
office of the MNR report a good
response to CWIP in this area. A
keen interest has been expressed in
a number of endeavours such as
bird house building, bird banding
and improving habitat for grouse
and woodcock. The diversified list
goes on to include things like the
planting of wildlife shrubs on
private land and a wetland
development project.
Applying for CWIP funds is
easy. If you think that yours may
be a worthwhile plan, contact your
local MNR office for an applica-
tion form. Wildlife experts are
available to provide you with ad-
vice prior to and during the pro-
ject. Processing of the application
usually takes several weeks, so
planning should be done well in
advance.
If approved, the cost of
materials and equipment is covered
by the CWIP grant. The work is
carried out by volunteers.
