FARM ADVICE
What is financial planning?
In these uncertain economic
times, with ever-changing legisla-
tion and a myriad of complex
financial products, it is difficult
for one to concentrate on minimiz-
ing his income tax burden and to
keep pace with inflation.
Farm owners have problems
specific to their situations which
may require the need of a financial
planner. For example, a farmer
may wish to treat all family
members equitably, in the event of
a premature death, and also retain
the family farm for one or more of
the children. Estate planning will
ensure that this situation will hap-
pen as desired.
Farmers concerned about the
eroding effect of decreasing land
values on their farm assets can help
offset this problem by properly ar-
ranging their asset mix.
The financial planning process
involves the following method of
implementation:
• Clarify your present situation by
assessing all relevant financial data
such as tax returns, investments,
liabilities, etc.
• Identify personal goals and ob-
jectives which may include pro-
viding for children's education,
maintaining current lifestyle or
providing for retirement.
• Identify financial problems
which create barriers to financial
independence. Problem areas may
include: investments not keeping
pace with inflation, too high a tax
burden or too little or too much in-
surance protection.
• Provide written recommenda-
tions structured to meet your in-
dividual situation.
• Assistance in implementation of
the various recommendations that
will assure that you reach your
goals.
• Periodic reviews to account for
changes in your situation.
The financial planner uses em-
pathy, investment, and taxation
expertise, and product knowledge
to develop a plan to fit your needs
and goals.
Be open with your financial
planner. Giving all pertinent infor-
mation allows them to use their
ability on your behalf.

Students seek summer employment
Summer is approaching very
quickly and we all know that this
means busy times ahead for
farmers. It is not uncommon for
farmers to work from dawn till
past dark every day, nurturing
their crops to ensure a good
harvest, and then not be able to get
the crops off before the weather
changes because they did not have
enough help. If only they had a
few extra hands...
Canada Employment Centres
for Students register Post Second-
ary and Secondary students who
are seeking summer employment.
When employers call in requesting
help, the C.E.C.S. staff go
through their files and locate
qualified students who fit the
employer's requirements. The
students are referred out to the
employer who then decides who
they will hire. The C.E.C.S can
also supply employers with infor-
mation on government programs
available that encourage the hiring
of students.
If you have had a bad experience
with student workers, please do
not give up on them. While some
students are simply poor workers
just as some adults are, the vast
majority are eager to work and
they want to do a good job. The
problems may rise from the fact
that many students are poorly
prepared to deal with the difficulty
of farm work. The Canada
Employment Centres for Students
are trying to improve this situa-
tion. Farmers can help by giving
the C.E.C.S. as much lead time as
possible as to when they will need
help. This will ensure that a good
file search can be used to locate the
best student workers available.
To hire a student, contact the
Canada Employment Centre for
Students nearest you. ❑
