FARM ADVICE
in contact with wildlife, such as
deer or rats, which may carry the
disease.
Because there are over 100
serotypes of the Ieptospirea
species, several companies have
developed a five -way vaccine
which provides protection from
the five most common forms, in-
cluding, L. pomona, L. grip-
potyphosa, and L. hardjo.
Though vaccination against the
disease is recomended as common
practice, there is a tendency to vac-
cinate only if an outbreak occurs.
"Probably only 50 per cent of
farmers have vaccinated against
the organism," remarks Dr. San-
ford, " and less than that probably
use the vaccine on a regular basis."
Livestock should be vaccinated
regardless of location or
prevalence of the disease on an an-
nual basis.
The "mini -explosion" of lep-
tospirosis in South Huron and
North Middlesex is not severe.
However, there is no way of know-
ing how long it will last. Therefore,
following precautionary measures
can only benefit a herd in any loca-
tion and prevent further con-
tamination. ❑ MT
Electro -immobilization:
unacceptable practice
For a number of years, electro -
immobilization units have been
used by some producers and
veterinarians to restrain livestock,
cattle in particular, for a variety of
procedures.
The Canadian Veterinary
Research Trust Fund recently
funded a project at the University
of Guelph; results indicate that a
high degree of stress, discomfort
and anxiety is experienced by the
animals if this equipment is used.
Upon examining this research,
the Canadian Veterinary Medical
Association, through its Humane
Practices Committee, issued the
following statement, "Because
electro -immobilization apparatus
may cause unnecessary pain and
distress to animals, the C.V.M.A,
finds the use of this equipment to
be unacceptable. Controlled
studies have indicated no signifi-
cant analgesic effect."
