The survey shows that custom rates vary and in some operations quite widely. The plowing, discing and field cultivating rates varied with the local conditions under which the operations were per- formed. These conditions include type of soils, size and shape of field, obstructions, time of plow- ing (such as spring or fall), and the kinds of crop residues handled. Some custom operators made a distinction in the rate charged for discing and/or field cultivating depending on the condition of the field, or if other equipment such as levellers, harrows and packers were pulled behind the discs or cultivator. Variations in rates occurred in planting, spraying and fertilizer applications depending on materials used, quantities of water required and extra handling in- volved. In most cases, the farmers supplied the materials for weed spraying operations. To avoid misunderstanding, the rate charged and the material or materials used should be clearly agreed upon by the farmer and the custom operator before spraying commences. Combining rates varied because of conditions encountered such as crop lodging, excessive weed growth, muddy fields and other poor operating conditions.
