Safety hats consist of an outer shell and an inner suspension. Plastic and fiberglass hats are good choices for agricultural work since they resist impact, water and burn- ing. Some may offer a limited elec- trical shock protection. Bump caps provide some head protection, but not enough for jobs with danger of heavy impact and flying or falling objects. The shells and suspensions of hats and caps should be checked semi-annually to determine their condition. To insure maximum protection for the wearer, it is recommended that shells be replac- ed within five years and suspen- sions within one year, unless in- spection reveals defects prior to the expiration of these periods. Cracks and holes can seriously affect the electrical shock protection. Winter liners are available for all types of safety hats. Safety hats are a good protec- tion to provide for yourself and your workers. Hats must have the Canadian Standards Association label of approval. This is intended only as a guide to personal protective equipment on the farm. Detailed data sheets on various topics are available from the Canada Safety Council. ❑ S.M.V. EMBLEMS FOR FARM MACHINERY The familiar, triangular slow mov- ing vehicle sign must, by law, be attached to all farm equipment travelling on the highway. Serious injuries have occurred as a result of collisions between regular traf- fic and farm equipment not displaying the slow moving vehicle emblem. Make sure your sign shows on the highway this sum- mer.
