The Rural Voice, 1986-04, Page 56benefits of inside storage in terms of prolonged machine life and bet- ter resale value dictate that you should be looking at a machine shed. A side benefit of the machine shed will be that it will also give you an area to organize a small workshop. You can probably per- form some maintenance and repair jobs yourself. Anything you can do to avoid or reduce those big repair bills will improve your cash flow. This equipment shed should be located in an area and built in a manner that can be expanded as your equipment investing increase. 12. Near the end of the list you may look at buying a combine. Keep in mind that this is a "big ticket" machine. Another factor with combines is not only the high interest and depreciation costs, but also the cost and skills involved in operating and maintaining the machine. If you do have big acreages to harvest and these other factors haven't dampened your en- thusiasm — maybe you can justify owning a combine. Specialty crops like edible beans can add a factor of timeliness that will help to justify your own com- bine. 13. A forage harvester would come next. The forage harvester can be a big power user. This means you'll likely have to add a size or two to one of your tractors. Custom forage harvesting can be hired — maybe not as readily as combine in this area. However, timeliness is generally less of a pro- blem with the harvester. A custom operator can improve your forage yields and quality. He's going to be able to do your harvesting in a short period of time. He's also going to get you on a fairly regular harvesting schedule. You may not see things from this point of view. You may have valid reasons to have your priority list arranged a little differently. The main thing is to have well reasoned priorities. For example, you may not have thought things through if you start out buying a combine and a plow, but don't have tillage and planting equipment. Farming is a tough, competitive business. If you get your machinery priorities mixed up, you'll be making it that much harder to survive. ❑ FEED FOR PROFIT LUCKNOW FEED TANK • 14 Gauge Metal • Heavy Duty Angle Iron Reinforcing Ring and Legs • 4T to 20T Capacity LUCKNOW FOUR AUGER MIXER FEEDER Designed to professionally mix farm feeds such as haylage, silage, shelled corn, meal & concentrates 285 c. ft. and 375 c. ft. models available 4 point electronic scales MANUFACTURED BY ieCa HELM WELDING LIMITED LUCKNOW, ONTARIO, CANADA PHONE (519) 529.7627 HOT DEALS HONDA RTC ffidetheHaaghCountry.
