The Rural Voice, 1986-04, Page 33FARM NEWS Bruce wants 1990 match A delegation from Bruce County attended the Ontario Plowmen's Association annual convention February 17-18 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Representing the Bruce County Plowmen's Association were presi- dent Don Gowland of Teeswater, secretary -treasurer Roger Thorne of Tara, Reeve of Elderslie Township Jack Cummings, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Brunton of Tara, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ribey of Port Elgin (Bruce County O.P.A. Director), Vern Inglis of Macln- tosh, and Bruce County Queen of the Furrow Marie Henhoeffer of Teeswater. The Bruce County group was on hand to observe as three county clubs — Essex, Brant, and Lamb - ton — made presentations for their bids to host the 1989 International Plowing Match. A new ruling allows county associations to bid three years in advance of the match instead of five. Each delegation had less than half an hour to create the necessary image that would attract the judges to their county. Winning the bid for 1989 was Essex County. Bruce County plans to make a bid to host the Match at next year's Ontario Plowmen's Association Convention. While there is no say- ing whether they will get it, geographically their chances are good. In 1986 the Match will be held in Hastings, in 1987 in Grey, and now in 1989 in Essex. This could mean that the judge will look favourably at taking the Match north from Essex in 1990. BCPA president Don Gowland says that a lot of preparation will go into making the bid a superb one. He adds that the enthusiasm will have to come from within the county itself. Due to the tremendous success of the last match held in Bruce County, and the spin-off effect it created, judges and agriculturalists alike may well be swayed in the county's direction. Never has Bruce County received so much publicity as it has in the past four or five "bad years." The way that Bruce sells itself and supports its association will make the dif- ference when the bids are made at next year's convention.
