The Rural Voice, 1986-02, Page 45FARM NEWS Bank postpones farmer's eviction Norman Robinson, the Grey County farmer who attracted public attention last December by fighting an eviction notice, has come to an agreement with the bank. As of January 16, the farm was sold and Robinson has moved from the premises. He credits the publicity generated by the threat of a farm gate defense with giving him a chance to negotiate a more suitable moving date. When Robinson received his eviction notice on December 8, he was still in hospital recovering from surgery. He was given ten days to move. Although he realiz- ed there was nothing more he could do to save the farm, Robin- son needed more time to make ar- rangements to move his family and possessions. He appealed to the Grey County Federation of Agriculture (GCFA) to come to his aid, as the federation had declared a moratorium on farm fore- closures. The Bank of Nova Scotia in Hanover was notified by the federation that the eviction would be resisted and further negotia- tions were requested. The members were put on alert to be at the Robinson farm the morning of December 18. "We had a lot of support from many members because of the cir- cumstances," says Murray Clarke, vice-president of the GCFA. "We were prepared to hold a peaceful demonstration." But it didn't come to that. At the last minute the bank relented, agreeing to postpone the eviction until after Christmas and to fur- ther negotiations. ❑ GB New show CKVR, Barrie, premieres a new show called AG WEEKEND.
