FARM NEWS
FWIO for farmers
The Federated Women's In-
stitute of Ontario (FWIO), has
joined other rural organizations in
calling for greater government
assistance for the ailing farm
economy.
Directors at the FWIO annual
meeting (in late November) called
for a meeting between FWIO
representatives and the leaders of
the three provincial political par-
ties. The resolution added that it
was the Institute members' hope
that these meetings "could develop
a time frame for the positive action
... promised on behalf of
farmers."
The directors also learned that
there are no provincial regulations
concerning the safety of people
and livestock when farm manure
holding tanks are installed, unless
the farmer applies for a grant from
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food. The direc-
tors approved a motion asking that
OMAF, the Ontario Ministry of
Municipal Affairs and Housing,
and the Ontario Ministry of the
Environment "introduce provin-
cial legislation stating that all types
of existing and future farm manure
holding tanks have adequate safety
measures maintained at all times."
Concern for the safety of rural
property owners prompted a se-
cond resolution requesting that
"the Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources strengthen the protec-
tion rights of landowners in rural
areas under the Trespass to Pro-
perty Act by forbidding persons
from hunting game from the road-
sides in rural and agricultural
areas."
Another farm -related motion re-
quested that Environment Canada
pass the necessary legislation to
remove Ring -billed Gulls from the
list of protected species.
The Women's Institute, first
established in 1897, has often
taken a public stand on educa-
tional issues, which directors did
again at the annual meeting. The
FWIO directors approved a mo-
tion asking the Ontario Minister of
Education "to implement a law
change to deny the teachers of On-
tario the right to strike."
The board approved a resolution
expressing concern that vehicles
continue to pass school buses when
