The provincial government is reluctant to allow the Ontario Stockyards to operate under a special set of regulations and yet force stiffer ones on community stockyards. Therefore, there will be a time of reconciling regulations to make the Ontario Stockyards fit, Hedley says. C PC Pork producers pass resolutions One resolution passed this year at the Perth County Pork Pro- ducers' annual meeting is a follow- up to a resolution passed last year. In 1985, Perth asked that the OPP- MB investigate the possibility of funding research in pork technology. This would help create new pork products. "Before, we did only production research; now it's time for market research, says Willy Keller, Fullarton pork pro- ducer and OPPMB provincial director for nine years. Producers took his advice and voted in favour of a resolution ask- ing that the OPPMB continue to aggressively pursue the develop- ment of research in pork technology. Other resolutions were carried: • that the OPPMB continue to lob- by the provincial government to maintain funding of Al facilities and research. And that the OPP- MB aid in the funding of AI facilities and research if required. • that the length of service of pro- vincial directors to the OPPMB be limited to four three-year terms to bring in new people, new ideas, and new thinking. • that the OPPMB initiate a study with the objective of creating an appropriate support system for the pork industry members. This resolution arises from a situation in Nova Scotia where, because of odour, a hog farmer recently had to go through litigation in testing his right to produce hogs in a rural setting. The resolution recognized that OFA does offer some help to farmers in similar situations in On- tario. • that the problems of shrinkage of hogs held over by packers should not penalize the individual pro- ducer, but should be spread over the weekly pool.F1PC A NEW CONCEPT IN SWINE PRODUCTION THE BACONMAKER LEASE -A -SOW Advantages: • No Money Down • Low Monthly Payment — Cost would be Tess than one pig per litter • Guaranteed Breeders • No Capital Investment in Sows • Genetic Improvement — Larger Litters, Better Growth and Grades • Primary Herd R.O.P.
