Farmers will also find new infor-
maton and small changes. Poast,
for example, has been registered
for use in white beans for the first
time.
The 1986 Field Crop Recom-
mendations, Publication 296, also
has some new features in recogni-
tion of current trends in
agriculture.
For example, Heard points out
that information about intensive
cereal management has been in-
troduced. The section about lodg-
ing control states that in a field
where lodging is expected, a plant
growth regulator such as Cerone or
Cycocel Extra may be used.
It's also encouraging, Heard
says, that the publication responds
to problems experienced in 1985.
For example, the Cereal Leaf Bee-
tle was a problem in certain areas
of Ontario last year, and the new
book includes a recommended
control. Previously, it just told the
producer to call OMAF if they had
a problem with this pest.
Also notable in the cereal section
is that Perth Barley, for the first
time, is no longer on the recom-
mended list.
Another trend acknowledged by
the publication is the acceptance of
canola as a crop in some parts of
Ontario. Previously, it had shared
a section with soybeans, but a new
section on canola and rapeseed has
been introduced this year.
The usual information about
soybean varieties is included.
However, in 1985, for the first
time, OMAF published a small
pamphlet in the fall examining On-
tario soybean variety trials.
Publication 296 has the same in-
formation, but the pamphlet is
available in late fall allowing
farmers to order varieties that
might be in demand or in short
supply.
Farmers will also find a chart in-
terpreting leaf tissue analysis
results in Publication 296 this year.
Heard says that these tests are
mostly used when some type of
problem is detected in order to
determine the problem more
precisely.
OMAF has printed 60,000 of
both Publication 75 and Publica-
tion 296 which are available at the
