2 THE RURAL VOR 1
EDITOR'S DESK
Many farmers, who are con-
sidered the cream of the crop are
running into difficulty despite
good management practices.
They and others, not certain that
they have a viable farm operation,
are turning to farm financial con-
sultants to help provide a realistic
overview of their farm. Our main
feature, by Alice Gibb, is about
Kingsmount Financial Services,
Ltd., of Arva, a typical example of
a consulting firm. Business is
booming, says its president Ron
Phillips, ruefully, which means, as
you suspect, that all is not well
down on the farm. Ten per cent of
his accounts are what he considers
to be sound operations, but their
owners are checking to see if their
equity is eroding.
Barry Cleave from Varna, is
"chicken" through and through.
He's a poultry breeder, a judge,
and a painter and his "chicken"
portraits are featured this month.
A pig can be as stubborn as a
mule, says Charlie Hischon, who
should know. He's been trucking
pigs and cattle for more than fifty
years. C.I. Hischon Transport,
Inc., R.R. 1, Sebringville, has
come a long way. One time he ac-
tually took pigs to market in a sta-
tion wagon. Today, three tractor
trailers serve his 125 regular
customers.
Now, this is really news — Mur-
ray Gaunt, farm editor for CKNX,
Wingham, actually cooking in the
kitchen? See page 50. Remember,
you saw it here first.
The deadline is fast approaching
for The Rural Voice Competition
for artwork, stories, and poems by
young people in the area. Par-
ticulars are on page 46. 'Ti! next
month.
