Having already talked with many
groups, Wise notes that dairy farmers
were among the first to question the
wisdom of free trade. Their first reac-
tion to free trade was negative, Wise
said. But he recalled a complaint
from a dairyman who said, "The
damn Americans can ship ice-cream
into this country, and they're shipp-
ing tons of it. And we can't ship it to
the U.S." This is one area in which
Canada should try to negotiate, Wise
said.
Answering a question about the ef-
fect of free trade on the feather in-
dustry and other commodities under
supply management, Wise said, "If
we sign an agreement, it'll have to be
a square deal, a better deal, and a fair
deal for Canadian agriculture. We
have to utilize this opportunity to
guarantee access to the U.S. market.
But do not get yourself into problems
by generalizations. You have to look
at it commodity by commodity." j
