The Rural Voice, 1985-12, Page 31FARM NEWS phenomenon that a lot of people con- sider it to be." The grower suggested the technique could be renamed the "improved cereal management" system. In outlining the points of impor- tance when switching to ICM, Cameron said the most important factor is still "real good husbandry in the fields." Cameron said growers should start by soil testing fields where they plan to use intensive cereal management and then plant certified seed in narrow rows. Cameron also emphasized the importance of nitrogen, noting that it should be ap- plied in splits for some crops like hard wheat. The grower warned that U.S. researchers are already concerned that environmentalists will someday "tell us how much nitrogen we can put on the fields due to the leeching effect it has." Cameron said that ap- plying nitrogen in splits just might "outsmart" the environmentalists. He also recommended using a growth regulator to keep the crop standing taller during harvest, which shortens combining time. Turning to more "political" topics, Cameron criticized regula- tions governing the use of agricultural pesticides on cereal crops. "If we can't use the products," he told growers, "then we shouldn't have to compete with agricultural im- ports from countries allowed to have the chemicals." Cameron also said that while socie- ty has moved into the technological age, the licensing of new crop varieties is still steeped in tradition. "We must have varieties which are bred for response to ICM," he told the growers. The licensing of new crop varieties is such a slow process, Cameron said, that the minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board has admitted that he grows unlicensed varieties on his own farm.
