From the OFA
Convention
"Deadline" news from the Annual
Meeting of the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, held November 25 to 27
at the Skyline Hotel in Toronto:
• TRIPARTITE STABLIZATION
IS IN PLACE: Ontario Minister of
Agriculture and Food Jack Riddell
announced the implementation of the
program to delegates at the annual
meeting luncheon November 25.
"This program has a long history
of delays," Riddell said, "They are
just that, history. I am flying to Ot-
tawa this afternoon to sign a tripartite
stabilization agreement with my
federal counterpart."
• INCUMBENT ELECTED
PRESIDENT: Despite strong cam-
paigns by OFA First Vice -President
Brigid Pyke and Second Vice -
President Jack Wilkinson, the incum-
bent Harry Pelissero was re-elected as
president.
• Donald MacDonald, chairman of
the Royal Commission designed to
seek new directions in Canadian
economic policy, met a largely hostile
audience when he attempted to
outline the commission's position in
favour of free trade and curtailing
supply and management boards.
Delegates told MacDonald in no
uncertain terms that they wanted no
part of either proposal, which they
saw as undermining what little securi-
ty they had.
"We are dealing with multinational
companies like General Motors that
use supply management," noted Len
Padyk, a Norfolk County delegate.
He berated MacDonald, adding that
"We're determined to produce our
own food and put a price on it."
MacDonald warned the delegates
that farm interests had better be well
represented and that their position
had better be coherently put forth at
any free trade negotiations.
• CKNX freelance television report
Glen Creamer was presented wtih this
year's media award. The award is
given annually by the OFA in
recognition of an outstanding con-
tribution to agricultural reporting in
the province.❑
