WHAT'S NEW?
First live pasteurella vaccine
Vetrepharm Inc. has introduced
PRECON-PH, the first live
Pasteurella Haemolytica vaccine with
demonstrated effectiveness for the
control of pasteurella pneumonia in
beef and dairy cattle.
Optimum protection against shipp-
ing fever pneumonia in beef calves is
provided when the animals are vac-
cinated 7 to 10 days prior to shipping.
Clinical studies have shown that the
incidence of this costly disease is
reduced from 50 to 60 per cent in the
controls to 0 to 5 per cent in the vac-
cinated group.
In a vealing operation, the vaccina-
tion of 14 -day-old Holstein calves
reduced the incidence of respiratory
disease (42.5 per cent in the vac-
cinates vs. 76.6 per cent in the con-
trols) and showed a marked reduction
in relapses (8.2 per cent in vaccinates
vs. 46.8 per cent in the controls).
The intradermal route of ad-
ministration increases the vaccine's
effectiveness by prolonging the
presence of the live organism at the
injection site. This enables the
animals' immune system to respond
to both the cytotoxin and the surface
antigens of the organism, thus over-
coming a serious deficiency in
previous inactivated pasteurella pro-
ducts.
PRECON-PH is also recommend-
ed for use in dairy calves being moved
from outside hutches into calf barns
and dairy cattle destined for export.
PRECON-PH is available through
your veterinarian in boxes of five
5 -dose vials and boxes of ten 20 -dose
vials with corresponding dilutent.

"Triple p" early weaning parlour
De Cloet's "triple p" early wean-
ing parlour was installed at Walt and
Brenda Jackson's 200 -sow operation
in St. Thomas recently.
The Jacksons' 150 3 -tier nursery
has put through more than 450 pigs
with no mortality in the two months
since installation. Pigs have gained
weight faster with no setback.
The system has variable cross flow
ventilation and a preheat room,
which render the seamless, controlled
environment virtually draft -free. The
reduced stress on piglets is making
17 -day weaning practicable in addi-
tion to reducing mortality to less than
one per cent.
