Wide row crop tractor
Recognizing the tough economic
conditions facing the North
American farmer, Massey -Ferguson
has introduced a "cost cutter" ver-
sion of the MF 283 tractor, designed
specifically for the needs of farmers
working with wide row crops such as
tobacco and vegetables.
Called the MF 283 Wide Row
Crop, this 67 PTO horsepower
(manufacturer's rating) utility tractor
has a manufacturer's list price under
$21,000.
The MF 283 comes complete with a
new wide front axle capable of up to
96 -inch tread width without the use of
spacers, allowing for straddling two
48 -inch crop rows. The equivalent
96 -inch rear tread width is achieved
through the use of spacers already
available through the MF parts
system.
Other significant differences from
the original MF 283, first released in
March of 1985, are that the new MF
283 has row crop 15.5-38 PAVT rear
wheels and tires and dual auxiliary
valves as standard equipment,
Designed for economy and ease of
operation and maintenance, the trac-
tor features a four -cylinder, direct -
injection Perkins diesel engine and an
eight -speed manual transmission with
two reverse speeds and half of the
eight forward speeds in the important
two to seven mph working range.
The MF 283 Wide Row Crop Trac-
tor features the advanced Ferguson
system, a combination of mechanical
linkage and hydraulics which pro-
vides both automatic and fingertip
control of the Category II three-point
hitch. This allows for the use of
smaller horsepower tractors to per-
form lighter jobs but still do the
heavier jobs when required, resulting
in savings of both time and fuel.
Overall length of the MF 283 is
146.6 inches and the width is 82.9 in-
ches. The tractor's wheelbase is 48 in-
ches and it weighs approximately
5,690 pounds.0
