Ontario at Dairy Expo
Ontario won the state herd com-
petition at the Holstein Show at the
World's Dairy Expo in Madison,
Wisconsin, October 4 and 5. This is
the biggest of three national shows
held in the United States.
Ontario did have an edge because
its selection of eight animals for the
state competition included the Grand
Champion Holstein owned by
Hanover Hills Holsteins of Port
Perry. The most impressive thing
about this victory is that Ontario has
now won the state herd competition
at this, one of the world's largest
dairy shows, for six consecutive
years.
In addition to making this win
possible, Hanover Hills farm also
won the prestigious Premier Breeder
Award. Of 1,200 dairy cattle at the
show, A Brookview Tony Charity,
also of Hanover Hills, won the most
prestigious award of the entire show.
After becoming the Grand Champion
Holstein among 450 animals, it com-
peted with the Grand Champions of
each of the National Dairy Breed
shows and became the Supreme
Champion. This exceptional cow is
valued at $1,450,000 and was also
1984 Supreme Champion at the Dairy
Expo.
Hanover Hills was one of about ten
Ontario exhibitors at the Expo. Also
receiving recognition is Janice
Needham of R.R. 1, Ripley. She
showed Madeen Warden Holly, the
top Holstein Junior Heifer. Jack
Maitland of Arthur placed first in the
Holstein Junior two-year-old class.
Stu Smaile of St. Mary's placed
seventh in the two-year-old class.
The Reserve Junior Champion
Holstein at the event was also shown
by an Ontarian, Elwood Robertson
of Elora. ❑
Good news rare
Good news for pork producers has
been a rare commodity of late. But
Tom Smith, chairman of the Ontario
Pork Producers' Marketing Board,
had some to offer at the Pork Con-
gress' annual meeting in Stratford
October 7.
The weekend before, all major
slaughter houses had been open for a
Saturday kill, the first one in a couple
of years. And the Japanese market
for Ontario pork is looking brighter.
To top it off, the forecasts of a
disastrous $35 bottom in U.S. hog
prices have been unfounded to date.
