would also like to be excluded from
any free trade agreements.
Riddell did, however, emphasize
that the U.S. is a big tnarket for
Canadian agricultural products. "It
is our ... biggest customer, our fastest
growing market, and the area where
we have the greatest potential for
future growth." Riddell is also seek-
ing other export opportunities, and
has plans to travel to the United
Kingdom, Belgium, and Spain
leading a trade mission.
Both Huron and Perth farmers
asked specific questions about the
spills bill. Riddell cautioned farmers
not to become "paranoid" about the
bill. He has sent a letter of concern to
the Minister of the Environment
about certain parts of the bill. Since
under the new bill a spill would mean
unlimited liability for the owner,
there has been fear that farmers
wouldn't be able to get insurance
coverage they could afford. Riddell
brought good news that the mutuals
would protect farmers against spills
in regular policies.
The spills bill is essentially positive,
Riddell said. He expects that it will
make truckers, manufacturers, and
all those affected by the new bill to
run safer operations.
In Huron County the issue of the
proposed hydro corridor was raised.
Riddell told farmers that they would
receive help from OMAF lawyers, as
all farmers did in the last round of
hearings. But he also told Huron
farmers they can't expect any special
favours in preventing the corridor
from passing through Huron. "I
represent all farmers in Ontario."'P'
