Detects antibiotic residue
in milk
Penzyme Milk Test, a new screen-
ing test for detecting antibiotic
residue in milk, has been introduced
to dairy farmers in Canada by
Salsbury Laboratories Ltd. for
SmithKline Animal Health Products.
In 25 minutes, Penzyme can accurate-
ly indicate whether milk samples con-
tain penicillin or other beta-lactam
antibiotic residues.
The test is easy to perform: a small
quantity of milk (0.2 mL) is added to
a vial containing an enzyme powder
and mixed. The vial is placed in a
preheated incubator for five minutes.
Then a reagent tablet is added to the
vial, the contents are mixed, and the
vial is again placed in the incubator.
After 15 minutes of incubation, the
colour of the solution in the vial is
compared to the colours on a
reference chart enclosed in the kit.
The Penzyme Milk Test is an en-
zyme assay based on a known
chemical reaction that occurs between
beta-lactam antibiotics and the test
chemicals. If beta-lactam antibiotics
are present, they will bind to the test
enzymes, preventing or interfering
with the chemical reaction which
generates a pink colour. The pink col-
our indicates that no beta-lactam an-
tibiotics are present in the milk sam-
ple. Progressively lighter shades of
pink or a yellow -white sample in-
dicate increasing amounts of
penicillin, ampicillin, cephalosporins,
or related compounds. The Penzyme
Milk Test kit contains enough vials
and reagent tablets to run 25 tests.

Hog handling table
Anyone who has tried to trim a
sow's feet or perform veterinary pro-
cedures on a mature pig will ap-
preciate the hog handling table in-
troduced at this year's Pork Congress
in Stratford.
The device, manufactured by C.N.
Suter Ltd. of Hagersville, resembles a
small cattle squeeze. After the pig
enters, it is fastened securely to one
side of the device by heavy straps.

horizontal position so that the animal

Herd Health Policy. So far 244
pigs have been shipped giving
us a carcass index of 106. A
