FARM NEWS
tne Royal's salute to youth in 1985.
The event will run for two days at the
Royal: Sunday, November 10 will be
the Contact Hays Classic Showman-
ship Class, Monday, November 11
will be Contact Hays Classic Confor-
mation.
This will be the first time that the
Contact Hays Classic has been held at
the Royal. First held in 1979, the
show was the brainchild of Tom E.
Hays of Hays Farm International
Ltd. in Oakville, Ontario, and the
magazine, Dairy Contact, published
in Calgary, Alberta. Their purpose
was to give young 4-H members the
opportunity to show their dairy calves
at a major event.
"The Contact Hays Classic is not
just another exhibition," explains
Andy Stewart, general manager of
the Royal. "There are only six entries
allowed from each county. The com-
petition at the county level to be in-
cluded among these six is fierce. It
has increased the expertise of all those
who show at the Contact Hays
Classic and raised the general level of
showmanship across the province.
The Royal is delighted to be able to
include the Contact Hays Classic in
its program this year, especially
because we are focusing on youth in
1985."
Last year there were more than 260
entrants in the Contact Hays Classic
in all classes. Although the show is
listed as the Ontario All Breeds
Junior Dairy Show, participants
come from across Canada. Last year,
when the Contact Hays Classic was
included in the Ontario Holstein
centennial celebrations in Markham,
Ontario, every province except New-
foundland was represented. The
organizers of this year's event expect
the same representational turnout as
last year. Financial support from the
provincial and federal governments is
available to those 4-H members from
other provinces who would like to
show at the Contact Hays Classic.
Further information can be obtained
from provincial departments of
agriculture or provincial 4-H
chapters.
The judges have not yet been con-
firmed, but as in past years, the judge
of the showmanship classes will be
Canadian and the judge of the con-
formation classes will be American.
