Recipes from the Kountry Katerers
by Alice Gibb
The Kountry Katerers, a four -
woman catering service in the Kirkton
area, is one alternative to the usual
coffee klatch. Instead of meeting to
chat over coffee, Kirkton residents
Joyce Bickell and Vera Fletcher and
farm wives Helen Shute of R.R. 1,
Kirkton and Marilyn Robinson, of
R.R. 1, St. Marys, decided they'd
socialize over a stove.
Their catering business was born
four years ago during an afternoon at
the beach, says Shute. The friends, all
reputed to be good cooks, decided
they wanted to use their cooking skills
while earning some money and hav-
ing fun in the process. The result was
the Kountry Katerers, launched with
a small ad in the local paper.
Just three -months after going into
business, the team served 300 people
at a company banquet in St. Marys.
Their specialty is country -style din-
ners, usually roast beef or dressed
pork, completed by homemade des-
serts of the customer's choice.
"Everything is homemade, nothing
is out of a can," says Bickell.
While most of their meals are
typical country fare, they did provide
stuffed salmon for one banquet and
steamed Christmas puddings for
another. But their most -requested
desserts remain their homemade pies,
with pecan and raisin sour cream pies
particular favorites, says Fletcher.
Has the catering business proved
fun? Most of the time, yet, but Shute
