(Photo by Alice Glbb.) Recipes from the Kountry Katerers by Alice Gibb The Kountry Katerers, a four - woman catering service in the Kirkton area, is one alternative to the usual coffee klatch. Instead of meeting to chat over coffee, Kirkton residents Joyce Bickell and Vera Fletcher and farm wives Helen Shute of R.R. 1, Kirkton and Marilyn Robinson, of R.R. 1, St. Marys, decided they'd socialize over a stove. Their catering business was born four years ago during an afternoon at the beach, says Shute. The friends, all reputed to be good cooks, decided they wanted to use their cooking skills while earning some money and hav- ing fun in the process. The result was the Kountry Katerers, launched with a small ad in the local paper. Just three -months after going into business, the team served 300 people at a company banquet in St. Marys. Their specialty is country -style din- ners, usually roast beef or dressed pork, completed by homemade des- serts of the customer's choice. "Everything is homemade, nothing is out of a can," says Bickell. While most of their meals are typical country fare, they did provide stuffed salmon for one banquet and steamed Christmas puddings for another. But their most -requested desserts remain their homemade pies, with pecan and raisin sour cream pies particular favorites, says Fletcher. Has the catering business proved fun?
