RURAL HERITAGE
First aid
for history in the home
Beginning with this issue of The
Rural Voice the Stratford -Perth Ar-
chives will be submitting a page each
month on information regarding
rural heritage. Various practical and
useful aspects will be covered about
taking care of that old historical stuff
around the house, the office as well as
other things such as envelopes of this
and that to do with organizations.
First of all, an introduction is in
order. The Stratford -Perth Archives
is an institution started in 1972 and is
funded entirely and jointly by the Ci-
ty of Stratford and the County of
Perth. In essence, it is a local history
research centre which is used daily by
people making family trees, others
wanting to know more about their
buildings, students with stories on
local subjects, authors writing books,
university students working on
essays, etc., etc.
In 1984, we were able to help most
of the 2,000 people who came in.

Besides, we answer letters every day
on all kinds of subjects. How old is
my McLagan chair? Tell me about
my grandfather. I'm researching tor-
nadoes, have you had any big ones in
the past? I've got some old pictures
and letters which you can have. These
are some of the things people write
about but most of them are looking
for relatives.
The archives is managed by a board
appointed by Stratford and Perth. To
make sure residents are getting the
best of their archival tax dollars,
branch offices have been established
in Listowel and Mitchell. In this way
the archives, in three parts, has been
taken to the people who use them. It
is working very well and school child-
ren have much closer access.
First Aid for History
An archives is a special kind of
museum in which nearly everything is
made of paper. It is the archivist's job
to preserve historical items so that
they can be available for use without
wearing out. First, items must be
recognized as being important. Se-
cond, they have to be handled care-
fully and third, they must be kept in a
good environment.
What things are important?
Because some things have been
kept so long around the house or of-
fice it is a clear indication that some-
one values them as treasures to
themselves or someone else.
We should try to remember, too,
that the things we use today are the
history of tomorrow such as new
photographs, the fresh clippings, the
account books, the letter from grand-
ma last week, and so forth. If they are
considered important enough to put
away and save, they should be given
special care to ensure their survival.
How should important things
be handled?
People handle objects with their
hands. If hands are not clean, then
