Include love, forgiveness on list
by Rev. Linda Hill
Anglican Churches
Question: "What do you buy for the person who has
everything?" Answer: "Nothing."
I smiled when I first heard this Christmas joke a
few years ago. Its wisdom goes against the
materialism of our consumer culture. However, the
joke assumes that someone can have everything they
need or want. Although its true that most Canadians
are not lacking material goods, many are desperately
in need of love and forgiveness -- from other people.
December is a time when we struggle to make or
buy gifts for those on our list. But have we forgotten
something? Have we included love and forgiveness on
ow- "Christmas Gifts" list?
Perhaps you can think of someone you are angry
with. Maybe a friend you are not peaking to, a
relative or community group you avoid. Many human
exchanges cause anger and hard feelings, and these
emotions can fester for years.
It is likely that your anger is justified. Maybe you
were betrayed or neglected or insulted. Many Psalms
acknowledge the reality of anger and the rightness of
expressing that anger.
But tremendous damage can occur when we misuse
our anger by being cruel or by holding on to it.
Psychiatrists tell us that lingering anger leads to
depression and anxiety and even physical illness. And
we all know how long-standing grudges can damage
family relations and friendships. Isn't Christmas a
good time to give the gift of love and forgiveness?
Forgiveness is not easy, but with the grace of Jesus
Christ it is possible. The reward is more love and
friendships in your life, and maybe even improved
health! Perhaps the Holy Spirit is prompting you right
now to add something to your "Christmas Gift" list --
the giving up of a grudge, or the decision. to be a
peacemaker. These Christmas gifts will bring pleasure
even to those who already have "everything."
May the God of all peace give you the blessings of
joy and forgiveness this Christmas season.
They're thinking about others
If I had one wish for Christmas it
would be $10,000,000 and I would
give some to the poor. Then I
would buy presents for myself and
some of my family. For myself I
would buy a swimming pool and .a
snowmobile and a Sega and a lot of
games, a V.C.R. and some tapes.
Then I would put most of my
money in saving bonds.

If 1 had one wish for Christmas it
would be $100 billion dollars. Then
I would pay off the country's
deficit and give $25 billion to the
poor. With the rest of the money I
would buy Dad a new tractor and
some more land. For me I would
buy a nice toy like a big train set.
Later on when I become 16, I
would buy a big nice car and when
I become 18 I would buy a big, big,
house. Then I would buy a big
company like N.A.S.A. Then I
would have so much money I
would help everybody who is poor.
Jacob Miltenburg
St. Joseph's.
If I had one wish for Christmas it
would be...That Canada would pay
off its deficit and have no more
GST or PST anymore. Everyone
would get half of the money they
spent back on taxes. They would
build a home for all the homeless
and give money to poor countries
and people would have a happy
Christmas. • Later ' on the poor
countries would pay us back twice
as much.
Benedict Ritgen
SL Joseph's.
If I had one wish for Christmas it
would be... A walkman, a bike, a
thousand - no a million dollars
would . be nice. Fantasies and
dreams and little kids thoughts.
What would I wish for? Why
there's people who don't have food,

or a penny to spare. Probably there
are people who don't even care
anymore about Christmas than any
other day of the year. But what if
by some miracle or someone's
wish, they could have one day of
the year where all of their troubles
would leave and they could know
the true meaning of Christmas, of
joy and happiness, good food and
health. Why I bet it would make
anyone happy, and glad inside just
to know they helped someone.
So I guess if I had that one single
wish I would wish for everyone to
know the true meaning for the
sentence of "Have a Merry
Christmas" and make it really come
true.
MERRY
CHRISTMAS
