Peggy Kinsman Lucknow, South Kinloss Presbyterian Churches In the opening monologue of Fiddler on the Roof we hear these words spoken: "How do we keep our balance? °I can tell you in one word. Tradition!" Because of our traditions everyone here knows who he is, and what God expects him to do. without our traditions life would be as shaky as a fiddler of the roof. There's a lot of truth in these words. Traditions shape our Lives and become part of who we are as individuals and families. Traditions give a rhythm to life. They give us a sense of security and stability. In our often shaky world we need traditions. Over time, families establish their own traditions for celebrating Christmas. As family units evolve and change, our traditions also change. What are the traditions in your home? How do you celebrate christmas? With a family gathering? With special decorations that hold cherished memories? With the giving of gifts to loved ones? In many homes special foods are prepared and enjoyed at this season. Traditions are an important part of the Christmas celebration. Over the years my family has developed traditions that have become part of our Christmas celebration. We look forward to these with anticipation each year. Some traditions have changed and been replace by others. One tradition that has survived the years is our gathering on Christmas Eve. The gift wrapping stops, the turkey stuffing is put aside, the frantic pace of , getting ready is slowed. In early evening, tradition descends. In the candlelight of the church my family gathers .with others who've come to hear the story that lies at the centre of ,all Christmas traditions. As the story is re -told we come to understand anew the meaning of all our traditions. In the Christmas Eve " service we hear of a baby born in a manger, of shepherds who watched and magi who brought gifts. And of cow -se, there are the angels who sing. For my family this is the one tradition upon which all the others hang. Perhaps this is true also for your family. If not, consider starting a new tradition this year. Pause. Take time away from all the busyness of your Christmas traditions. On Christmas Eve this year gather with family and friends to hear the Christmas story and to sing with angels: Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth Peace among those whom He favors.
