At Monday night's meeting of the Huron -Perth Roman Catholic Separate School Board, trustees voted to extend busing for the 1994-95 school year into Huron County to the board's only secondary school until another one is established in Huron. "Virtually anyone in Huron County can attend St. Michael as long as they can get to the designated dropoffs," said Trustee Vince Mclnnes (GRcy, Brussels, •Wingham, Morris, Turnbcrry, Howick, Blyth), chairperson of the management committee. "We're committed to Catholic education for everyone." He added that a bus dropoff point would be established where the numbers warrant. Dr. James Brown, director' of education, said the board and the Huron County Board of Education both recently agreed to work together to establish a Huron secondary school in the public board's Central Huron 'Secondary School (CHSS), in Clinton. 4 HEART to HEART MATCH MAKERS CLUB A confidential way to • meet that special someone SPECIAL st lottt3 & itbit§ Call Collect ..,794.4691 LUCKNOW & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Dabber Bingo Lucknow Community Centre NO BINGO DECEMBER 26/93 & JANUARY 2/94 -_$1000 --Jackpot Winner Jeff Longmeir - Gorrie Community Centre opens at 6:30 p.m. Bingo•starts at 7:15 •p.m. CHSS has a capacity for 1,400 students, however there are 600 students now attending the school. A Catholic secondary school would occupy one part of it. Although Dr. Brown doesn't expect any major capital work to the building, he does anticipate some structural changes to accommodate an administrative area. A cost to open thc•school has not been determined, said Dr. Brown, as the project is "in its infancy." Dr. Brown said it would take four years before the school would be in full operation with all grades. The Catholic secondary school' is expected to open in the fall of 1995. At that time, it would house only Grade 9 students. In the following year, it would teach Grade 9 and 10 students, and so on. "We can't make a decision without student involvement," he said. Once the board has held public mecungs and surveyed separate school supporters on their interest in having a separate secondary school, the board will decide to move ahead. To help in determining public interest, the board decided to establish an ad hoc committee to collect information, hold public Separate School. teachers ratify deal with board Elementary teachers with the Huron -Perth roman Catholic Separate School Board agreed to make changes to the their contract agreement so the board can reach its social contract target. The board had to, cut $657,000 from its $33.5 million budget --$15 million of which is for salaries. Teachers agreed to increase the pupil teacher ratio from 17.5 to 18.6. This will result in the elimination of 11 full=time teacher positions throughout the board's 17. elementary schools. Gaetan Blanchette, superintendent, said he doesn't expect anyone will lose their jobs. The positions will be eliminated through attrition. The deal was ratified by teachers on Dec. 9. "We feel that funding won't be any more in 1996. The eliminations of these positons will be permanent savings for the board," he said Monday night. Blanchette said the majority of the cuts will be at the principal and vice- principal level so the effects won't be felt in the classroom. • The board's secondary teachers also recently changed their contract agreement. It resulted in the loss of three full-time teacher positions. LISTINGS WANTED PAUL ZINN 528.2411 WARREN ZINN 528-3710 ASHFIELD - 4 acres, remodelled brick home, 2 barns, 40 x 40' shed.
