Madill students receive
excellent results in test
F.E. Madill Secondary School has
received excellent results for 136
Grade 12 students who took part in
a province -wide skills test.
Local results contrasted sharply
with the provincial results, of the
test of 24,000 Grade 12 students. •
Ninety-one per cent of Madill's
advanced level Grade 12s produced
pieces of writing at or above Level
4, the minimum acceptable of six
levels set for the test This com-
pares with a provincial average of
64 per cent, and the Toronto
average of 53 per cent.
At the general level, 90 per cent
of Madill's students wrote at or
above their minimum standard,
Level 3, compared to a provincial
average of 76 per cent.
The writing assessment Was con-
ducted over a two week period in
the 1991-92 school year, and was
desigiried to measure. students'
abilities to develop ideas, organize
thoughts, apply conventions of
language (grammar, spelling,
punctuation)', and use specific
writing techniques. The evaluation
system,, based on a six level scale,
was devised by a pool of 20
educators, parents, and business and
labor representatives from across
the province.
Twenty-two per cent of the ad-
vanced level Madill students wrote
at the top level, Level 6, compared
to seven per cent provincially, and
40 per cent wrote at Level 5, com-
pared to 24 per cent provincially.
While the results in urban schools
were affected by the large numbers
of students for whom English is a
second language, the results locally
are encouraging for students,
parents, and teachers, all of whom
play a role in valuing and
developing writing skills. .
. F.E. Madill Secondary School
was the only Huron County secon-
dary schoolselected for par-
ticipation in the sample of province -
wide writing skills test for Grade 12
students.

Dollars can be
saved in
busing and
benefits
The Bruce Board of Education has
set its sights on busing and benefits
as two areas it can save money.
Plans are to cut the $5.4 million
transportation budget by 6.5 per
cent to match expected provincial
grant cuts in 1994. Finance chair
Allan MacKay said rate reviews,
combining routes with neighboring
boards and allowing two more years
on the life of a bus will drop costs.
The board now Shares more than
68 bus routes with other boards, up
from about 40 routes a year ago.
Meanwhile, the board .hired the
Alexander Consulting Group of
Toronto to review the $1.25 million
a year it spends on employee
benefits. The goal is to find a
cheaper way to provide way to
provide the same kind of benefit
package.
MacKay voted against* the
contract, saying he preferred to give
the job to a Bruce county company
that tendered a comparable price to
do the work.
UCW members

atmosphere was the setting for 45
members of the Lucknow United
Church Women, as they enjoyed
coffee and dessert prior to the an-
nual meeting on Dec. 7.

ladies took part in a Christmas
candlelight service. Barb Helm,

meeting.

Lucknow UCW, conducted the
business and opened with a poem
"Spirit of the Season".
Reports on the year's work Were
heard from all committee heads.
The UCW had a good year, both
spiritually and financially, so that in
addition to the donations given in
the budget, an extra donation was
given to St. Paul's United Church
.College, Five Oaks, House of
Bruce, Queen Parks Ministries and
the Mission and Service Fund.
The UCW enjoyed fellowship this
year at their meetings, as well as
working together at the annual fowl
supper, catering to weddings and
other functions.
Laura 'Lee. Cayley presented a
portfolio on adopting a child from
El 'Salvador.
Deanna expressed her thanks to
everyone and closed with the UCW
