Lobbying starts for location. of DHC
by Andy Bader
Every municipality in Perth and
Huron counties would undoubtedly
like to have the new district health
council administrative offices within
their jurisdiction.
Why not? Their $300,000 annual
budget would bring with it new
jobs (at least five initially, with
spin-offs ali but assured), rent on an
existing building or even the pos-
sibility of a new one.
The lobbying has already started,
even before the first 20 -member
Huron -Perth DHC has been formed.
The Huron and Perth Steering
Committees met in mid-November,
with former Perth Warden Bob
McTavish proposing that Perth
house the new DHC headquarters,
preferably "somewhere along the
Highway 8 corridor."
During that same meeting,
McTavish recommended that
Mitchell be the chosen location.
Ken Englestad, of Goderich, said
at the time that Mitchell would be a
logical choice because the town
doesn't have a major health facility
(hospital) and is fairly central and
therefore easily accessible for all
DHC members.
Last week, however, Stratford
Alderman Kathy Rae, a member of
the Perth Steering Committee, said
in a story in The Stratford Beacon-
Lucknow Christian Reformed Church

Herald the city would be the best
location because of the con-
centration of health professionals
and related services, the Stratford
General Hospital is the largest
medical facility in the two counties,
and the availability of public
transportation, conference facilities
and amenities such as restaurants
and entertainment.
At Thursday's meeting of Perth
County council, Logan Township
Reeve John Van Bakel maintained
that Mitchell and area would be the
best location.
"We should try to work it toward
the Mitchell area," he told reeves.
Stratford's bid isn't the best
choice, ne saiu, because Mitchell,
Dublin and immediate area are
centrally located between Huron
and Perth.
"Huron County (members) won't
be receptive to going all the way to
Stratford," Van Bakel said.
Hibbert Township Reeve Walter
MC:Kenzie reaffirmed that their
municipality, and more specifically
Dublin, is the best choice, especial-
ly since the .Huron -Perth Roman
Catholic Separate School Board has
their administrative offices in
Dublin already.
"We have a lot of positives to
offer," he said, adding that the

Huron County
students will
get an extra
week's holiday
Huron County elementary and
secondary school students will
receive an additional weeks holiday
during the March break. Students at
Bluewater Secondary School will
not be affected.
The Huron County Board of
Education says the extra week will
be comprised of the combination of
a le -located Easter Monday plus
four unpaid days for teachers and
support staff affected by the Social
Contract Act. Staff members not
affected will be subject to alternate
work arrangements.
The Board says students will still
attend school for the same 'total
number of instructional days. This
results from shifting currently
scheduled professional activity days
to become instructional days, as
was done with the Oct. 22 profes-
sional development day, which was
converted to become an instruc-
tional day for pupils.
Individual schedules for Huron
County 'schools will vary slightly
for the balance of the current school
year, to accommodate prior
variations in the examination
schedule and the datesfor'previous-
ly scheduled professional activity
days.
The revised schedule now
matches that of the Huron -Perth
Roman Catholic Separate School
Board and is expected to coincide
with similar changes under discus-
sion in at least one other area
Board. The bbard says the match
will reduce complications for
parents with children in Catholic
separate elementary schools and
older siblings in secondary schools.
Where bus routes are shared bet-
ween school boards, transportation
scheduling problems in many parts
of the county will be reduced.
