Update accounting skills this winter
Update Your Skills
Christmas overtakes our schedules
and budgets during the month of
December and lets us put off the
thoughts of doing our year end
books, and getting ready for the
accountant. For others, December is
a major time for tax planning and
budgeting for the coming year.
To help you meet the challenges
of bookkeeping and tax planning,
two basic Bookkeeping and Farm
Check out these new GICs
As the business year draws to a
close, thoughts turn to Registered
Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)
contributions.
1 In mid-January, a new instrument
will be on the shelf called the
Agricultural Guaranteed Investment
Certificate. These new GIC's will
be available through local credit
unions and when pooled will be
used to provide farm loans for: the
purchase of farm real estate; the
construction or improvement of
farm buildings; the purchase of
movable farm machinery and equip-
ment; the consolidation of farm
debt; and off -farm, farm related,
value added ventures in rural On-
tario.
The Agricultural GIC's are made
available under OMAF's Rural
Loan Pool Program. The program
encourages rural residents to invest
in their own communities and at the
same time farmers will have
improved access to credit.
OMAF will be providing a partial
guarantee on loans made to
qualifying applicants. The loan limit
has been set at $500,000 to target
small and medium sized farms and
other rural businesses.
Naturally, the number of loans
will depend on the province wide
sale of Agricultural GIC's. There
are no limits to the amount a person -
can invest in Agricultural GIC's
under the program, however, sales
provincially cannot exceed $50
million.
Tax Update workshops will be held
in Bruce County. The first one will
be Thursday, Dec. 16 at the Wiar-
ton Town Office from 9:00 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. Topics to be addressed
are basic bookkeeping for tax pur-
poses, single versus double entry
accounting, filing for GST, bank
reconciliations and preparing for
year end. A representative from a
local accounting firm will give a
farm tax update covering specifics
as the Business Investment Tax
Credit, paying wages to children,
and business versus personal expen-
ses.
The second course will be held at
the Walkerton OMAF office on
Wednesday, Feb. 2, 1994. The cost
per person is $10, payable to the
Bruce County Education Account.
To register, call the OMAF office.
